Introducing the Piezowave

September 8, 2022 1:26 pm Published by admin Comments Off on Introducing the Piezowave

The piezowave is very effective at treating bone, joint and tendon injuries even if chronic like arthritis. This modality uses acoustic sound waves to mechanically stimulate deep tissues in a focused and precise manner. The machine looks like an ultrasound machine and even uses ultrasound gel. The sensation is like a deep massage when an injured area is treated. Treatment usually takes around 15 minutes and is performed weekly for three weeks before pain level is reassessed.

Meet Buddy, one of our piezowave patients!

Buddy came in for an appointment because his left forelimb was giving out on walks thus he could only walk two blocks. Upon examination, we determined that he was painful in his neck likely due to a slipped disc and this had resulted in weakness in his left forelimb and decrease in sensation of his left rear paw. We treated him weekly for three weeks with the piezowave and placed him in a harness instead of a traditional collar. Upon reexamination, his pain and limited mobility was resolved and the sensation was now normal in his left rear paw once the slipped disc had been treated! He is now excited to go for his walks and is able to walk for a longer distance again! He still comes in for monthly piezowave treatments for tune ups. The last treatment he was jumping up and down on the benches in the lobby!

Give us a call to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Williams to assess whether this amazing treatment is right for your pet.

Del Ray Animal Hospital is happy to offer balanced raw diets for cats and dogs.  Dr. Williams feeds her pets frozen commercial raw diets.  She would often refer to Pet Sage for owners to buy raw diet.  Once this pet store closed due to COVID, we decided to start carrying some raw food as it is often difficult to buy online.

We will carry Vital Cat turkey and chicken patties for cats.  Consult the website catinfo.org www.catinfo.org for transitioning cats from dry to canned food as many of the same tips apply.

For dogs and cats, we will sell Steve’s nuggets in chicken and turkey.  For more information consult stevesrealfood.com for transitioning tips as well as a feeding guide.

Grape and Raisin Toxicity in Dogs

October 13, 2015 2:20 pm Published by admin Comments Off on Grape and Raisin Toxicity in Dogs

raisinsMeet Mosley, a 1 year old lab who is temporarily looking a bit sad due to his treatment to induce vomiting after ingesting a large quantity of grapes.Thankfully, his owners were aware of his indiscretion and brought him in immediately. For over 10 years, veterinarians have been aware of a toxicity causing severe kidney failure in some dogs that have ingested grapes or raisins. We have yet to identify the toxin and it is unclear why some dogs are affected and others are not. All types of grapes as well as currants, sultanas and raisins have been implicated, and even small amounts can be fatal. Once symptoms have occurred, prognosis is guarded even with very aggressive therapy. Cooked raisins in baked products don’t seem to be causing problems so it is possible the toxin is sensitive to heat..but we are not sure. Please,DO NOT FEED GRAPES OR RAISINS TO YOUR PETS!

Over The Counter Sleep Aids – A Cautionary Tale

September 7, 2015 5:02 pm Published by admin Comments Off on Over The Counter Sleep Aids – A Cautionary Tale

sleepaidMeet Rover, a 5 yr old beagle mix. Rover’s owner came home from work to find him suddenly unable to move, growling and crying out as if in pain. He immediately brought him to us and by the time he got here, Rover was almost untouchable. He was clearly neurologically impaired- tremoring, aggressive, thrashing around- easily over stimulated by touch and sound. He had severe liquid diarrhea, was drooling with his head pressed against the floor and rapidly breathing. Since Rover had been completely normal when his owner left for work, we suspected some sort of toxicity and began supportive care measures. A quick inspection of the home by his owner revealed a half eaten bottle of an over the counter sleep remedy called “Calming Sleep”. One of the ingredients in this supplement is a chemical called 5- HTP(hydroxytryptophan). At high doses, this chemical can induce a toxicity known as seretonin syndrome – occurring when excessively high levels of seretonin affect the central nervous system. Many other antidepressant medications can have this same effect if ingested at high levels. After transfer to the emergency clinic, Rover was treated with a rectal dose of a drug called Cyproheptadine which works as an antidote in cases of seretonin syndrome. With this medication, time and supportive care, Rover made a full recovery. Remember that “Natural” does not always mean safe. Please keep all personal prescription drugs- as well as supplements- away from your pets.
